Could an NFC reader and an nfc tag be used to quickly and cheaply automate the setting of clocks and registration of warranty for household goods?
How?
Use an nfc tag to encourage a user to tap the tag to setup their device.
The tag goes to a setup page on the manufacturers site where the phone is asked to transmit the phones time via nfc.
An cheap nfc reader in the device reads the time and sets the clock.
Depending on the software of the appliance a number of settings could be transmitted from the users phone to the device.
Note wifi or bluetooth pairing is NOT Needed. So this is really easy to accomplish.
In addition echo pages could be used to retrieve user address and name info conveniently.
